Flooded basements, burst pipes and hidden moisture
Water damage can spread beyond the area that looks wet. A burst supply pipe, appliance leak, failed sump pump or storm intrusion can affect flooring, baseboards, wall cavities and insulation. The first assessment should establish the source, the materials involved and whether the water may be contaminated. Stopping the source and removing standing water are only the beginning of the recovery process.
Water extraction and structural drying
Extraction removes accessible water; structural drying addresses moisture retained in building materials. Air movement, dehumidification and moisture checks help guide the work. Some materials may be recoverable, while saturated or contaminated porous materials may require removal. Repainting or closing walls before they are adequately dry can conceal moisture and lead to further damage.
Safe steps while waiting for help
Do not enter standing water where electrical equipment may be affected, and do not use a household vacuum to remove water. Avoid contact with sewage or unknown floodwater. If you can do so without entering a hazardous area, stop the water at a safe shutoff and keep people and pets away. Photograph affected rooms from a safe position and notify your insurer or property manager.

Water Damage Restoration: common questions
How long does water damage restoration take?
There is no single timeline. The amount of water, affected materials, ventilation, contamination and access all matter. Extraction may be one stage, followed by drying and any repairs. Moisture readings should guide when drying is complete rather than the surface appearance alone.
Can a flooded basement dry on its own?
Visible water can disappear while moisture remains under flooring or inside walls. A professional assessment can identify affected materials and whether controlled drying or removal is appropriate. Do not rely on an open window or dry-looking paint as proof that the structure is dry.
Is sewer backup cleanup different from a clean-water leak?
Yes. Sewage and contaminated water require precautions to limit exposure and cross-contamination. Keep occupants away from affected spaces, avoid direct contact and tell the restoration team about the suspected source before cleanup begins.
Can water damage lead to mold?
Persistent moisture can support mold growth. Address the leak, remove water and assess damp materials promptly. If you notice visible growth or a musty smell, ask about mold remediation as part of the recovery plan.
